Waking up
CLINOMANIA (n.) An excessive desire to stay in bed; a love of rest
This word is every one of us. Sometimes, the only thing that can pull me out of bed on weekdays is the knowledge that on Saturday my love and I will be together.
During your morning meeting
ENNUI (n.) Listlessness and dissatisfaction resulting from lack of interest; boredom
Pronounced as “ahn-wee,” this French loan word perfectly describes the lack of motivation and apathy that one often feels during end-of-week meetings. (Note: The presence of donuts at a meeting makes ennui impossible.)
Lunch
VICTUAL (v.) To take in nourishment; to feed (Also a noun, meaning food appropriate for human consumption.)
Lunch is either an oasis in the desert of a Friday, or it’s another ritual that must be endured to survive until 5:01. If the latter sounds more your speed, make sure that you pronounce it as “vit-l.”
Mid-afternoon
FUDGEL (v.) Pretending to work when you’re not actually doing anything at all
If you thought this was a new phenomenon, you’re wrong. People have been fudgeling away their days for at least 200 years. This amazing verb dates back to the 18th century.
4:59 pm
ELEUTHEROMANIA (n.) A fanatical zeal for freedom
This is an archaic word, but we need to bring it back. In the minutes before the day ends, one experiences such an intense anticipation that it’s a momentary sort of cabin fever. The need for freedom is real.
